Director of Engineering

Summary

Job Title: Director of Engineering

Location: Remote / US

Department: Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC)

Job Type: Full-Time

AMPYR Energy USA (AMPYR) is seeking a Director of Engineering to lead front-end engineering for our utility-scale solar and solar-plus-storage portfolio across the United States. This is a key technical leadership role responsible for shaping project viability from early development through pre-construction, ensuring best-in-class engineering standards, and supporting successful delivery at NTP and beyond.

The ideal candidate brings deep experience in civil/site engineering, PV system design, performance modeling, and BESS integration, along with a proven ability to manage multidisciplinary stakeholders and external consultants. This position reports to the VP of Engineering and Procurement.

Key Responsibilities

1. Technical Leadership

  • Lead engineering for solar and solar-plus-storage projects from early-stage development through NTP.

  • Oversee site and civil engineering activities including grading, stormwater, drainage, access roads, erosion control, and geotechnical coordination.

  • Provide technical direction on PV system design, array layout, DC/AC sizing, tracker configuration, inverter selection, and BOS assumptions.

  • Lead performance engineering, including PVSyst modeling, loss assumptions, PR analysis, shading, and long-term degradation evaluations.

2. Development & Feasibility Support

  • Develop project design criteria, feasibility studies, and technical memos to support land acquisition, permitting, and interconnection processes.

  • Review survey data, topographic information, geotechnical reports, hydrology studies, and environmental constraints to assess project viability.

3. Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with Development, Procurement, and Construction teams to align technical inputs with commercial and permit strategies.

  • Support procurement of major equipment: modules, inverters, BESS, GSU transformers, medium/high-voltage gear, and balance-of-plant components.

  • Interface with Independent Engineers (DNV, UL, Black & Veatch), Owner’s Engineers, EPC partners, AHJs, and utility counterparts.

4. Project Controls & Quality

  • Establish engineering standards, QA/QC processes, and best-practice guidelines across the portfolio.

  • Manage engineering budgets, schedules, work scopes, and consultant deliverables.

  • Review and approve design packages (10%, 30%, IFC, as-built) and oversee external engineering teams to ensure accuracy, consistency, and timeliness.

  • Foster a culture of technical excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related field.

  • 10+ years of engineering experience in utility-scale solar or solar-plus-storage.

  • Strong background in civil/site design, PV system engineering, and hydrology/drainage fundamentals.

  • Proficiency with performance modeling and design tools (PVSyst, PVCase, Helioscope, or similar).

  • Experience managing consultants, EPC firms, and cross-functional internal teams.

  • Solid understanding of NEC, IEEE, AHJ requirements, and utility interconnection standards.

  • Familiarity with permitting processes and environmental constraints.

Preferred

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in Civil or Electrical Engineering.

  • Experience with BESS engineering including sizing, augmentation, thermal modeling, and performance guarantees.

  • EPC contracting and RFP development experience.

  • Background working in ISO/RTO markets (CAISO, ERCOT, PJM, etc.).

  • Understanding of IRA incentives, Domestic Content requirements, and safe-harbor strategies.

Core Competencies

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities across a dynamic project pipeline.

  • Collaborative leadership style with strong cross-departmental coordination skills.

  • High attention to detail and a focus on risk mitigation and project optimization.
